The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, for a week or on a regular basis.

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia will hold training workshops to prepare volunteers to provide instruction to adults who want to improve their English literacy skills. Each tutor is matched with a student and encouraged to meet at least once a week for an hour and a half. No teaching or foreign language skills are required. A $35 training fee covers the cost of books and other materials. Workshops will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 10, 17 and 24 at the James Lee Community Center, 2855 Annandale Rd., Falls Church. For more information, call 703-237-0866.

Volunteers for Change, a program designed for busy adults with a desire to serve, features a flexible monthly calendar of more than 40 weekend and weeknight projects. Interested individuals can attend a one-hour orientation meeting, then choose from the program's monthly community service activities, including planting trees, bagging food for homeless families, tutoring adult students in English as a second language, playing bingo with the disabled and attending community-wide events throughout the year and more. The S.T.A.R. Tutoring Program needs tutors to help students in grades 4-12 in the Hayfield Secondary School pyramid with math, reading, science and social studies. Tutoring sessions will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. two Saturdays a month, starting Oct. 15. Tutors can choose the subject and the grade level. For more information, call 703-924-7444 or e-mail
