CENTENNIAL EAGLES

3A East Region

Coach: Jamie Wagner (second season, 1-8).

Last year: 1-8 overall, 1-8 league.

Last postseason appearance/state title: 1980/none.

Returning starters on offense/defense: 3/5.

Players to watch: RB/LB Alex Bechta, Jr.; DT/OT Jordan DeManss, Sr.; QB Owen Dresser, Jr.; RB/DB Justin Harris, Jr.; LB/FB Michael Rossberg, Jr.; WR/DB Jonathan Stumpf, Jr.

Run with it: The single-wing attack is geared to the Eagles' rushing game, which shows promise with the return of Bechta (631 yards, four touchdowns) and Harris (500 yards). The big concern is an offensive line that is one of the league's smallest.

Ballcarriers beware: Defensive tackles Josh Reyes, a senior, and DeManss, with defensive ends Riley Fritz, a junior, and Aaron Schulman, a senior, are being counted on in the team's 5-3 scheme to stop the run. If the Eagles are going to improve, the defensive line must establish itself and create room for linebackers Bechta and Rossberg to flourish.

What Wagner first looks for in a player: "Commitment. I want to see what they do in the offseason when you have to work out and do conditioning and the things that are not as enjoyable as playing games. If a player doesn't have a work ethic, then he'll never reach his full potential, and that's not someone you want on your team."
