Town Reports Water Thefts

The Town of Purcellville said it has had a significant problem with contractors stealing water for landscaping, construction work, filling pools and other activities. Companies involved have paid fines totaling $9,040, the town said.

Checkpoints Yield Arrests

Four people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol at a checkpoint outside Neersville on Saturday, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office said 1,010 cars were stopped in three hours at the checkpoint at Harper's Ferry Road and Route 340 near the county line. Ten drivers were given sobriety tests.

The Leesburg Police Department said one person was arrested at a checkpoint conducted at Fort Evans Road near the Evans Ridge Apartments on Saturday with the assistance of the Virginia State Police, Loudoun County Rescue Squad 13, Leesburg Police Citizens Support Team and the Loudoun Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

The department said 253 vehicles were stopped between 10:03 and 11:49 p.m. and six drivers were given sobriety tests. In addition, an officer working the checkpoint observed an accident in the Sycamore Hill subdivision and was able to stop the driver, who was subsequently arrested for hit-and-run, driving under the influence and refusing to take a breath test.

A second checkpoint at Plaza Street and Rockbridge Drive SE screened 88 vehicles between 12:21 and 2:03 a.m. Sunday. Three drivers took field sobriety tests and one person was arrested after attempting to evade the checkpoint.
