Region: 4A East

Past five seasons: 5-45

Starters back: Three on offense, three on defense

The Breakdown

If nothing else, the Raiders are an optimistic bunch. Even though the program has won just five games over the past six seasons and has never made the playoffs in the school's 27 years, 94 students came out to play this season. Nearly half were freshmen, and the creation of a freshman team had a lot to do with that. Nevertheless, it shows the Raiders feel they can win eventually.

"I'm real excited about it," Raley said. "They're beyond frustrated with the previous results."

The depth will tell the Raiders' veterans they won't have to do everything. Last year, Leonardtown started the season with only 23 varsity players and finished with fewer than 20.

Raley said he likes to run the option, and without a proven quarterback returning, this might give him the chance to implement that system. He would like to put the ball as often as possible in the hands of his veteran backs, seniors Quade Miller and John Barr. Look for Miller to line up as quarterback, and although he is working on his passing, he is most effective running the ball.

Senior Justin Gittings is an experienced fullback, but because the Raiders need to replace their entire offensive line, look for him to move up front. Senior Lucas Hammet, who played tight end last season, will probably move inside to tackle.
