Record: 33-28

Region: 2A South

Past five seasons: 28-23, one playoff appearance

Starters back: Six on offense, five on defense

The Breakdown

After making the postseason for the first time since 1990, the Rams drop down to the 2A South Region, which should be a good thing, if only to avoid Westlake, Lackey, Gwynn Park and Friendly come playoff time. But it's not a totally free ride; 2A South features Potomac, which became the first team in state history to finish 14-0 after winning its second straight region title.

A.J. Wallace returns to the backfield with junior Lucky Flammer, who was promoted from junior varsity in week seven last season and primarily returned kicks. Junior Christian Ward won a close battle with senior John Delozure and will start at quarterback.

While Wallace is as explosive as any running back in the Washington area, he can do only so much if the Rams cannot show an honest passing game. Senior Preston Faulk, who played football for the first time last season, is McDonough's lone returning receiver, and he caught just six passes. Look for Wallace to spread out wide, too. His 87-yard touchdown catch against Westlake set the tone for McDonough's 23-3 victory last season.

The Rams also return the most consistent kicker in the SMAC, senior All-Extra Andrew Geisert. His eight field goals, including kicks of 36, 39 and 42 against Westlake, led the conference.
