U-Md. Student-Built House

To Be Part of Solar Contest

A team of University of Maryland students is preparing a solar-powered house for display in the U.S. Department of Energy's 2005 Solar Decathlon. The house will be moved to the Mall at the end of September. The decathlon, from Oct. 7 through 16, features original designs and construction of livable homes powered entirely by solar energy. Houses will be judged on criteria such as power efficiency, livability and design.

Eighteen college teams, from the United States and several other countries, will have entries. The University of Maryland project began in 2003, aided by donations of money and materials. After the decathlon, the house will be given to Red Wiggler Community Farm, a nonprofit organization based in Clarksburg that employs adults with developmental disabilities.
