Calvert Sets Flu Shot Schedule
Calvert County public health officials announced the schedule for flu shot clinics this fall.
The Health Department recommends vaccination for anyone who wants to avoid contracting the flu, and particularly people 65 and older, all adults and children with chronic illnesses, children 6 months to 24 months old and women who will be pregnant between December and April. Infants must be at least 6 months old.
Flu shots cost $10 but are free for children who live in Calvert County. Medicare Part B coverage is accepted. For more information, call 410-535-5400 or 310-855-1353, Ext. 349, or visit www.calverthealth.org.
The day clinics will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 Thursdays.
* Oct. 6 -- Southern Community Center, 20 Appeal Lane, Lusby.
* Oct. 13 -- Calvert Pines Senior Center, 450 W. Dares Beach Rd., Prince Frederick.
* Oct. 20 -- North Beach Volunteer Fire Department, 8536 Bayside Rd., North Beach.
The evening clinics will be held from 5 to 8 on Thursdays
* Oct. 27 -- Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, 450 Solomons Island Rd., Prince Frederick.
* Nov. 3 -- Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department, 3170 W. Ward Rd., Dunkirk.
* Nov. 10 -- Solomons Volunteer Fire Department, 13150 H.G. Trueman Rd., Solomons.
St. Mary's Family Health Event
The Healthy Families Yard Sale and Health Fair is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 1 at the J. Patrick Jarboe Family Education and Head Start Center in Lexington Park.
The event is sponsored by the St. Mary's County Health Department and the Tri-County Youth Services Bureau.
Tailored to the needs of young families, the fair will offer door prizes, food, giveaways, health information and yard-sale merchandise.
"We know that healthy moms and babies have a greater chance for a happy life," Kathy Vibbert, community health nurse with the department's Healthy Start Program, said in a statement announcing the event. "This health fair will provide families with health information and educate them about services that can improve their health and happiness."
Information on topics such as menu planning, cooking nutritious meals, quitting smoking, parenting, talking with children, and highway safety will be available. A car-seat safety check will be included with a limited number of free car seats available for eligible people.
Local agencies and businesses planning to participate include Amerigroup; Southern Maryland Child Care Resource Center; Health Connections of St. Mary's County; Maryland Cooperative Extension; St. Mary's County Library; St. Mary's County Office of Community Services Highway Safety Program; Tri-County Youth Services Bureau; and the following St. Mary's County Health Department programs: Children and Pregnant Women's Dental Program; Healthy Start; Infants and Toddlers Program; Pregnant Women and Children's Program; and the Smoke Free for Life Smoking Cessation Program.
