Marymount University senior Amy Hibbits of West Caldwell, N.J., has been named a McGowan Scholar by the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund Inc. Hibbits, who is majoring in business administration, will receive a full-tuition scholarship for her last year at Marymount. McGowan, the founding chairman of MCI Communications Corp., established the fund to support business students who contribute to their communities.
Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va., recognized three Alexandria students for their academic achievements at the conclusion of its summer program. Robert Gray, 13, won the award for best student in concrete mathematics; Connor Gallagher, 12, won the award for most improved in concrete mathematics; and Christopher Nolan, 16, won a certificate of achievement for French III.
The Family and Children's Trust Fund of Virginia has presented Linda Johnson of Alexandria with its 2005 local volunteer award for her work as a court-appointed special advocate. Johnson has spent more than 2,500 hours working with Alexandria families and helping children find safe and permanent homes.
Empowered Women International -- A Woman's Story Gallery, a nonprofit organization that promotes the arts and entrepreneurial skills of refugee and immigrant women, has chosen three local artists for its annual Evelyn LaPierre Awards. Flory Jagoda of Alexandria, a musician and native of Bosnia; Klara Sever of Falls Church, a sculptor and native of Czechoslovakia; and Nora Partlow of Alexandria, an entrepreneur and native of Cuba, will be recognized Oct. 7 at the Durant Center in Old Town.
Leadership Fairfax, a nonprofit organization that works to identify leaders and bring them together to study community issues, has announced the finalists for its 2005 Northern Virginia Leadership Awards. Local finalists include Shannon Scott and William Walker, both of Alexandria, for the Youth Leadership Award, which recognizes an individual under 21 who helps other young people through service. Winners will be announced Nov. 4.
