No Shortage of Jobs

Ever wonder why Loudoun County has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the United States -- about 2 percent?

Just look at the job listings at local companies.

As this week began, for example, America Online Inc. had 178 openings at its Dulles headquarters alone.

Open positions at AOL's Dulles campus included architect, counsel, senior marketing manager, human resources specialist, business systems analyst, director of business development, senior software engineer and fraud investigator.

Bank Promotion

Middleburg Financial Corp., the parent company of Middleburg Bank, has named Alice Frazier as chief operating officer. Frazier is now the highest-ranking female banking executive in the Washington region, the company said.

Frazier, who lives in Leesburg, joined Middleburg Bank as a loan review officer in 1990 and was most recently executive vice president of the bank and its holding company. She will oversee both operations in her new position. Middleburg Bank, which was chartered in 1924, has four branches in Loudoun -- in Middleburg, Ashburn, Leesburg and Purcellville -- and one in Fairfax County -- in Reston. The bank plans to open a branch in Warrenton next month.

Airline Clipping Its Wings

Dulles International Airport will be a bit quieter this winter after financially troubled Independence Air cuts service to five airports and eliminates its flights to the West Coast.

Last winter, Independence had about 600 flights in and out of Dulles daily, making the airport one of the largest low-fare airline hubs in the nation.

By December, Independence will account for about 230 daily takeoffs and landings at Dulles.

Gone, for example, will be the carrier's daily service between Dulles and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Independence will instead offer two daily Airbus flights to New York's LaGuardia Airport, beginning Oct. 31. The flights will leave Dulles at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and leave LaGuardia at 12:35 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.

"Our customers have been telling us all along that they would prefer to fly into LaGuardia because it's closer to midtown Manhattan than JFK," said Rick DeLisi, the airline's spokesman.

On Oct. 31, Independence will drop service to Indianapolis, Cleveland, Louisville and Stewart International Airport in New York's Hudson Valley, in addition to JFK.

The airline's much-advertised West Coast flights -- often available for less than $100 one way -- will be eliminated by December, DeLisi said. The cutbacks are largely related to the soaring price of jet fuel, he added.

Limo Company Moves

A Loudoun County company with a decidedly Fairfax County name has named new officials and moved to a new facility.

Reston Limousine has named Jeff Morris as general manager and Kai Hebron as operations manager.

The 17-year-old company recently moved into a 20,000-square-foot facility off Route 28 in Sterling.

So what does Reston charge to rent a limo these days? How about $105 an hour for an eight-passenger limo or $125 an hour for a 10-passenger model -- with three-hour minimum rentals?
