Belle Phipps of Annapolis has received a Mentor of the Year award from the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County. Phipps is a mentor with the Teen Empowerment and Mentoring Program sponsored by the Junior League of Annapolis and Anne Arundel Medical Center. This is the first year the award was given out.

Linsey Gold of Annapolis has accepted a year-long fellowship in interdisciplinary breast surgery at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Gold is the third doctor to participate in the program, designed to provide training for physicians interested in specializing in breast surgery. Gold recently completed a general surgery residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Mich., through Michigan State University.

The Cultural Arts Foundation of Anne Arundel County has changed its name to the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County Inc. The organization is the body designated by the county executive to receive city, county and state funds for the arts. Its new name is in keeping with similar organizations across the state. Folger McKinsey Elementary School in Severna Park has been named a national No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School, an honor from the U.S. Department of Education. The blue ribbon recognizes the country's most successful schools. This year, six schools in Maryland and 295 nationwide received the honor.

Nancy Tucker of Millersville has been named deputy director of health information and promotion for the Anne Arundel County Department of Health. As deputy director, Tucker will coordinate cancer prevention, education, screening and treatment programs. She will also oversee the department's Breast and Cervical Cancer Program and the Women, Infants and Children Program. Tucker, a registered nurse, began her career with the department as a school nurse for Annapolis Middle School and Parole Elementary School.

Bill Deck of Annapolis has been named program manager for the county health department's Sanitary Engineering Program. Most recently, Deck worked for the Caroline County Department of Health as environmental health director.

Betty Jane McAllister of Annapolis has been appointed to serve on the steering committee of the Certified Nursing Assistant Section of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in Alexandria. McAllister is a certified nursing assistant with Hospice of the Chesapeake in Annapolis.

Anne Arundel firefighters Thomas Parks, Anthony Burke and Joseph Clawson were sent to Dallas with Maryland Task Force One to help with preparations for Hurricane Rita.
