The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, for a week or on a regular basis.

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia will hold training workshops to prepare volunteers to tutor adult students who want to improve their English literacy skills. Each tutor is trained, matched with a student and encouraged to spend at least an hour and a half a week helping the student improve English skills. No teaching or foreign language skills are required. A training fee of $35 covers the cost of books, materials and instruction. NARSAD, a mental health research association that funds research on brain disorders including Alzheimer's disease, autism, bipolar disorder, depression and epilepsy, needs volunteers to help with education and event planning. For more information, call Sheila at 703-757-0194.

Ragged Mountain Dogs, an all-breed canine rescue group, needs volunteers to assist at adoption fairs, plan fundraising events or foster rescued dogs. For more information, visit, e-mail or call 540-987-9207.

The Fairfax County Police need volunteers to become auxiliary police officers. Volunteers are trained to perform operational support and administrative duties, including traffic control, security, fingerprinting, crime prevention and patrols. The police department provides uniforms, equipment and insurance. Volunteers must commit to an average of 24 hours of service a month. Applicants must be Northern Virginia residents, at least 21 years old and in good health; those with criminal records or a history of drug use will not be accepted.
