Arlington Slaying Authorities in Arlington County are investigating yesterday's shooting death of a man whose bullet-riddled body was found near a hotel on Jefferson Davis Highway in Crystal City.
The man, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was shot several times while driving a late-model four-door Cadillac south on Route 1 shortly before 5 a.m., said Matt Martin, a police spokesman. He said the vehicle had Maryland license plates and was struck by gunfire many times.
Martin said officers arrived at Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1) and 20th Street South and found only the vehicle. About a half-block away, they found the wounded man, who was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead, he said.
Martin asked that anyone who was driving in the area between 4:45 and 5 a.m. and saw anything suspicious on Route 1 in Crystal City, or on the southbound lanes of Interstate 395 between the 14th Street bridge and Route 1, call the department at 703-228-4242. The homicide was the fourth this year in Arlington.
Woodbridge Homicide A 22-year-old Prince William County man was fatally shot Wednesday night in a Woodbridge neighborhood, police said.
Damion Marquee Ricks, of no fixed address, was found by police in the 14200 block of Matthews Drive in Woodbridge about 9:15 p.m., Prince William County police spokesman John Bogert said. Officers had responded to a report of a gunshot and a person yelling.
Ricks was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 866-411-TIPS.
Capital Murder Case A judge in Williamsburg has ruled that a deaf, mute and illiterate man is incompetent to stand trial for capital murder in the rape and slaying of a teenage girl.
Circuit Court Judge Samuel Powell ordered that Oswaldo Martinez, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, be sent to a state mental hospital for language training. An expert witness for the prosecution had testified that Martinez has practically no communication skills.
Martinez, 33, was indicted in May on charges of raping and killing 16-year-old Brittany Binger. Police say they arrested him after learning that DNA on Binger's body matched DNA swabbed from Martinez's cheek.
