Von Paris Moving and Storage of Arnold will collect donated items for Hurricane Katrina victims from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday during Chesapeake Family Magazine's birthday party event at the Knights of Columbus Center, 2590 Solomons Island Rd., Annapolis. Von Paris will transport the items to the YMCA of Alexandria, La., for distribution.
The only items that will be accepted are new and packaged undergarments, feminine hygiene products, antibacterial soap, shampoo, diapers, baby formula, flip-flops, paper towels, cloth towels and canned and nonperishable packaged food. For more information, call 410-263-1641.
The Court of Appeals in Annapolis approved an order allowing lawyers displaced by Hurricane Katrina to continue practicing law while temporarily residing in Maryland. Crofton Yoga will sponsor a sock hop from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. The event will be held at the studio, 2411 Crofton Lane, Suite 21. Food and drinks will be served while the band Higher by Nature leads the hop. Participants should bring socks to dance in. There will be a $5 cover charge; additional donations will be accepted. Arundel Habitat for Humanity will participate in "Operation Home Delivery," the national Habitat for Humanity program that will provide permanent homes to low-income families in New Orleans and the greater Gulf Coast area who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Arundel Habitat plans to pre-assemble the materials needed to build a house and send the components to the Gulf region, where families, volunteers and builders will finish constructing the homes.
