Bird Freed From Fireplace

FAIRFAX ST. S., 500 block, Oct. 5. An animal control officer captured a bird trapped in a fireplace and released it outdoors.

Injured Squirrel Euthanized

LEE ST. S., 400 block, Oct. 2. Animal control picked up a severely injured squirrel and took it to the city shelter, where it was euthanized.

Arlington

The following were among cases handled recently by the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, which operates the county animal shelter and provides animal control services to Arlington County. Creative Rescue for Squirrels

FREDERICK ST. S., 800 block, Oct. 4. Three squirrels were trapped in the basement window well of an apartment. They had entered through a grate covering the window well but could not reach the grate to climb back out. To solve the predicament, a neighbor went to a store and bought a plastic foam pole, or "noodle," marketed as a pool toy. The toy was put through an opening in the grate, and the squirrels climbed it and

escaped.

Ferret at Apartment Complex

COLUMBIA PIKE S., 4200 block, Sept. 24. A woman called animal control to report that her children had seen a weasel or an anteater in their apartment complex. She had not seen the animal but promised to call again if she did. Shortly afterwards, another person found a stray ferret at the complex and surrendered it to the county shelter, where it was held as a stray.

Special Shelter Hours

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington, which is usually closed on Sundays, will have adoption hours from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 23 to celebrate Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month. Dogs and other animals will be available for adoption at the shelter, 2650 S. Arlington Mill Dr., Arlington.
