Advice for Caregivers

Prince George's Community College and the county's Area Agency on Aging will present the second annual Prince George's County Caregivers Conference from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 at Prince George's Community College, Rennie Forum, 301 Largo Rd., Largo. The meeting will provide information on caring for others while caring for oneself. County Executive Jack B. Johnson (D) and state Sen. Gloria G. Lawlah (D-Prince George's) are scheduled to speak. New YMCA to Open Soon

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington will open a new branch in the county next week. YMCA Potomac Overlook, at 10709 Indian Head Hwy. in Fort Washington, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday to celebrate. Those who took part included Prince George's state Sens. Gloria G. Lawlah (D) and Nathaniel Exum (D); County Council member Camille Exum (D-Seat Pleasant); James A. Dula, deputy chief administrative officer for health and human services; and Hyattsville Mayor William F. Gardiner.

The branch will welcome the public Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. with a grand opening that will include fitness demonstrations, games, door prizes, snacks, a moon bounce and face painting.

The new 33,000-square-foot facility will feature child-care services, health and wellness programs, teen programs, summer camps, youth sports and personal training.

Fire Prevention Activities

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department reminds people to be careful when burning candles at home.

This year's theme for the week, which runs through Saturday, is "Use Candles With Care." The department also urges residents to test their smoke alarms and practice escape routes with their families.

Some county fire stations will hold open houses Saturday and Sunday to share fire prevention information with the public. The dates, times and locations are:

* Hyattsville Fire/EMS Station 1, 6200 Belcrest Rd., Hyattsville, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

* Capitol Heights Fire/EMS Station 5, 6061 Central Ave., Capitol Heights, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

* Laurel Fire/EMS Station 10, 7411 Cherry Lane, Laurel, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.

* Branchville Fire/EMS Station 11, 4905 Branchville Rd., College Park, 1-4 p.m. Saturday.

* Bowie Fire/EMS Station 39, 15454 Annapolis Rd., Bowie, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
