While Broad Run's Stephanie Garcia has been the area's top cross-country runner this season following her Dulles District championship from a year ago, Potomac Falls senior Kiersten Petersen has not been far behind.
At the Glory Days Invitational on Monday at Bull Run Park in Centreville, Petersen finished first in the varsity "B" 5K race with a time of 20 minutes 20 seconds. Earlier this year, she finished fourth at the Oatlands Invitational in Leesburg, about 25 seconds behind Garcia's second-place finish. At the Frank Keyser Invitational in Boonsboro, Md., Petersen won by 75 seconds.
In the Glory Days "A" 5K race, Garcia finished in 20 minutes, the best time by an area athlete at the meet and good enough for seventh place, 41 seconds behind the winner, Michaeline Nelson of Potomac School. Stone Bridge, in its final major tune-up before its first postseason appearance in the challenging AAA Northern Region, finished seventh, best among area teams.
Sophomore Nikki Jacoutot was 12th overall, finishing in 20:27.
In the boys' varsity "A" 5K, no area runner finished in the top 25.
Potomac Falls senior Andrew Johnson was 29th overall, helping to lead his team to 11th place overall. Stone Bridge finished 14th with help from Ephram Feyissa's 30th-place finish.
In the boys' varsity "B" 5K, Fauquier senior Ben Chrisinger won decisively in a time of 17:18, 14 seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Loudoun County had one of the area's best team performances, as its first four runners finished in the top 17 and the team took second overall with 71 points, just behind Jefferson's 69. Senior Ryan Hauptman was fifth in a time of 17:36, and junior Brian Glennon was eighth in 17:45.
Dominion's Brian Gould was third overall in a time of 17:32, helping his team to eighth overall, and Broad Run junior Corey Fuller was seventh, to lead his team to sixth overall.
For area teams, the postseason starts in less than two weeks. The AA Dulles District meet is scheduled for Oct. 27, the same day as the AAA Liberty District for Stone Bridge, the AA Northwestern District for Liberty and the AAA Cedar Run District for Fauquier. The AAA National District meet for Loudoun Valley is on Oct. 26.
