Airport Open House

Visitors to Leesburg Executive Airport on Saturday will have a chance to win door prizes and to ride in a plane as the airport holds an open house to showcase its terminal, tenants and facilities.

The day will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication for the newly resurfaced 5,500-foot runway, part of a $3.3 million repair project that ended in August.

Other open-house events include a display of single-engine planes and corporate jets and two helicopters used by MedStar and Inova Fairfax Hospital, said Stephen Axeman, chairman of the Leesburg Airport Commission. Short plane rides will also be offered.

Representatives of aircraft sales companies and local flight schools will be on hand, and donations will be collected for hurricane victims.

The open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the airport, 1001 Sycolin Rd. SE, Leesburg.

Volunteer Day Expanding

Nearly 1,000 employees of America Online Inc. hit the streets in Loudoun County on Friday in the fifth annual AOL Volunteer Day.

Employees of the Dulles-based company taught online safety at local schools, prepared holiday baskets for the needy and visited seniors at the Leesburg Senior Center. They also helped paint the Good Shepherd Alliance building in Leesburg and prepared literacy kits for the Loudoun Literacy Council.

But this was the last AOL Volunteer Day focused solely on Loudoun. Next year, AOL will team up with a District-based volunteer coordination service, Greater DC Cares, and serve communities in the District, Maryland and Northern Virginia.

The AOL/Greater DC Cares Servathon will be held May 19 and 20.

Golfing for Charity

The annual AH&T Insurance charity golf tournament raised $20,250 for Loudoun Interfaith Relief Inc. -- up from $15,000 last year.

The donations from hundreds of golfers, Loudoun residents and insurance industry representatives will help meet operating costs for Loudoun Interfaith Relief, which serves the county's needy residents through donations of food and goods.

The tournament was held Sept. 14 at the Piedmont Club in Haymarket. To donate money, time or a vehicle to Loudoun Interfaith Relief, call 703-777-5911 or visit
