The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, for a week or on a regular basis.

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Auxiliary needs help with various functions in the hospital and in its thrift shop at Fairfax Circle. For information on the next orientation session, for volunteers who can commit to work three to four hours a week, call 703-391-3659.

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia will hold workshops to prepare volunteers to provide individual instruction to adult students who want to improve their English skills. Each tutor is trained, matched with a student and encouraged to meet at least once a week for an hour and a half. Teaching and foreign language skills are not required. A $35 fee covers the cost of books, materials and instruction. The next basic literacy tutor training workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on three consecutive Saturdays, Nov. 5, 12 and 19, at the James Lee Community Center, 2855 Annandale Rd. in the Falls Church area. The Reston Association needs volunteers for its Halloween trail from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 26 to 28 at the Walker Nature Education Center. Volunteers 16 and older are needed to be trail guide assistants, costumed characters, makeup artists and staging assistants, and for food sales, setup and cleanup.
