River Hill at Long Reach
2 p.m. Saturday
River Hill is the only undefeated Howard County team, and Long Reach and Glenelg have one loss each. So this game will help determine the county champion.
River Hill, the two-time defending county champion, has defeated Long Reach in their past three meetings, including a 52-21 victory last year in which Long Reach gave up the most points in school history.
"Last year, we played the worst game we've ever played, and our guys haven't" forgotten about it, Coach Pete Hughes said. "It's a big deal for us to win our first county title, and the only way we can do that is by beating River Hill. This is the biggest game of the year."
The Hawks have won 16 straight games against league opponents dating from the 2003 season. And they've done it convincingly -- 13 have been by double figures.
The game features two top running backs. Long Reach's Josh Brown has rushed for 684 yards and 7 touchdowns on 87 carries, and River Hill's Nick Campanaro has 827 yards and 10 touchdowns on 115 carries.
"This game is going to have a playoff feel to it because there's so much riding on it," River Hill junior quarterback Daniel Hostetler said. "We need to win to win the county title and so do they, and we need to win so we can have home field advantage in the playoffs."
