What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"I oppose Ken Plum's rail plan to allow developers to 'density pack' more development and traffic into already-congested areas. I disagree with Plum's statement to business interests that 'density is not a bad word.'

We can get traffic moving with smart mass transit like bus rapid transit. I oppose Plum's plans for a county income tax [House Bill 770] and massive gas tax increases. I signed the taxpayer protection pledge with U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman witnessing. I also will introduce legislation keeping predators away from kids and repealing parole/probation for pedophiles."

Why should voters elect you?

"After a quarter-century of worsening traffic congestion and taxes, we need a change. I oppose Plum's county income tax, higher gas tax and increased density/traffic."

Kenneth R. 'Ken' Plum (D)*

Age: 64

Residence: Reston.

Education: BA, history and political science, Old Dominion University; M.Ed., University of Virginia.

Occupation: Retired director of adult education for Fairfax County public schools.

Elected offices/civic activities: Member, Virginia House of Delegates, 1978-80, 1982-present; chairman, Dulles Corridor Rail Association; chairman, Celebrating Special Children Inc.; board member, Virginia Literacy Foundation; board member, Virginia Career Education Foundation; member, board of trustees, United Christian Parish.

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"Increased state support for core state services, such as education and transportation, is the most pressing issue facing government today. The state must begin living up to its funding commitments for its public schools and colleges and universities to ensure Virginia's students receive the highest-quality education available. Additionally, we need to implement smart and balanced transportation programs, such as Metrorail in the Dulles corridor, to reduce traffic congestion and stress on the environment. The highest priority of government should be to guarantee citizens top-quality core services in safe and secure communities."

Why should voters elect you?

"With over 25 years of service in the House of Delegates, I have the energy, enthusiasm and experience to serve my constituents' needs and interests."
