What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"Our transportation system is in crisis. We cannot just tax and pave our way out of the problem -- we need a new approach. As a former mayor who worked with roads, rail, public transit, an airport and a port, I know how to get results. I'll do a better job of connecting land use and transportation so that we grow in ways that don't make congestion worse. I'll stop legislators from taking transportation funds for other programs. I'll promote the right balance of solutions because more choices mean better transportation."

Why should voters elect you?

"I will keep Virginia moving forward by promoting innovative transportation solutions and expanded early childhood education and continuing the successful management practices of the Warner-Kaine administration."

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"As a first-generation college student, I understand the value and importance of a quality education in order to compete and succeed in life. Ensuring that our children receive the best education possible no matter where they live or their economic situation will be my priority as governor. That's why I have put forward my '3 R's' plan to recruit, reward and retain the nation's best teachers -- because better teachers mean our children get a better education. My plan will provide additional funding for school construction and infrastructure so that our students have access to state-of-the-art classrooms and educational technology."

Why should voters elect you?

"I have a positive vision of honest reform to expand opportunity for all Virginians."

Occupation: State senator; president, Russ Potts Productions Inc.

Elected offices/civic activities: Member, Virginia Senate, 1992-present; member, Braddock Street United Methodist Church; former executive director, Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival; inductee, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame; member, Handley High School board of trustees; former president, Handley Judges Athletic Association; inductee, Handley High School Sports hall of fame; member, Grafton School Board; board member, Evans Children's Home, American Cancer Society, Valley Health Center, Boy Scouts of America; member, Exchange Club of Winchester.

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"Today, Virginia faces political and physical gridlock. We face one of America's worst transportation crises. Since 1986, our leaders have lacked the political will and courage to fix our transportation nightmare. Thus, we have a major crisis on our hands. We can no longer ignore the problem. The time is now to do the right thing regardless of political consequences. That means fixing our transportation crisis. To date, I am the only candidate for governor with a functional, feasible transportation plan that will start fixing transportation from Day One."

Why should voters elect you?

"Virginia needs a governor who will do the right thing regardless of political consequence. I am the only candidate who will put people above politics."
