What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"I would like to use the word 'challenges.' Lobbying county and state -- we have little authority. We must have the best school system; protect the rural tier; a new library; public safety by supporting a police department if the citizens approve; solve BG&E outages; widen the Route 197 bottleneck; extend Route 450 to Route 301; expand and support senior programs; support agreements to open Bowie Civic auditorium, upgrade and improve the golf course; city bus service; expanding Metro and 'The Bus,' funding for the Volunteer Fire Department; Old Bowie revitalization and community block grants; growth management at the Science & Tech Center."

Why should voters elect you?

"I have always worked for citizens no matter where they live. I believe that service to humanity is the best work of life."

Dennis Brady *

Age: 51

Residence: Pointer Ridge.

Education: BS, electrical engineering, BS, nuclear engineering, North Carolina State University; MS, electrical engineering, Johns Hopkins University.

Occupation: Electrical engineer, National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Elected offices/civic activities: Council member, Bowie City Council, District 6, 1994-2002; council member at-large, Bowie City Council, 2002-present; member, Maryland Municipal League board of directors, 2000-present; president, Maryland Municipal League, 2005; member, Prince George's County Municipal League board of directors, 2005; member, Citizens Association of South Bowie; member, American Legion.

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"Public safety. In comparison to other parts of the county, Bowie is relatively safe. As a result, the limited resources of the county's police department are redistributed to other areas. Commercial areas of the city are thriving. While violent crime is down slightly, property crime is up dramatically. If the voters approve, the next council will undertake the creation of a city police department. It will be a serious and costly undertaking. The next council will have to be diligent to ensure that its operation does not negatively impact all of the other excellent services that we provide our residents."

Why should voters elect you?

"Strong commitment to Bowie's citizens; proven leadership; institutional knowledge from 12 years of service; analytical approach to problem-solving; an understanding of complex technical issues."

Kevin W. Conroy

Age: 43

Residence: Bowie.

Education: AA, general studies, City Colleges of Chicago, through the U.S. military in Germany; attended University of Maryland at College Park for two years. BS, business, Bowie State University; BS, business administration, Almeda University.

Occupation: Correctional dietary manager, Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Maryland Division of Corrections.

Elected offices/civic activities: Vice chairman, City of Bowie Community Outreach Committee; vice chairman, Oden Bowie Democratic Club; secretary, Young Men's Democratic Club, Prince George's County; former member, Sport4All executive board; coach, referee and player, Bowie Boys and Girls Club; member, ASFCME, MCEA, Tulip Grove PTA, Knights of Columbus, Civitan Club, DAV, Ascension Church; volunteer, First Bowie High School mentoring program, Bowie Pantry and Winter Works.

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"Asset allocations. The city of Bowie pays over 12 percent of the county taxes, and yet we are only 6 percent of the county population. Our city is lacking adequate county police staffing, our county schools have been overcrowded, and we need the state to support building a road system that alleviates traffic congestion and promotes safety. We need additional libraries and a high school for our children, and a full-time hospital for the fourth-largest city in Maryland. We also do not have a state or county office in our city. We need to fight for our share."

Why should voters elect you?

"I am a life-long resident and am now raising my family here. I am a tireless worker for a just cause. I love Bowie."
