A Fairfax County man has been charged in the fatal shooting and stabbing of a man who was with the suspect's ex-girlfriend in an incident in which the woman also was seriously wounded, police said yesterday.

The shooting occurred about 10:25 p.m. Thursday in an apartment at the Gates of Fair Lakes complex, just off Fair Lakes Parkway in the Fairfax area. Police said several neighbors called to say they heard shots from an apartment in the 12700 block of Fair Crest Court.

A 37-year-old woman, whom police declined to identify, lived in the apartment. It also is the former residence of Anthony Lee Burdis, 38, who formerly dated the woman, police spokeswoman Mary Mulrenan said.

Also in the apartment Thursday night was John M. Shirley, 53, of the 3200 block of Annandale Road in the Falls Church area. Police declined to specify what his relationship was to the woman or Burdis.

Police also declined to detail the circumstances of the shooting yesterday. In addition to being shot, Shirley also was stabbed, Mulrenan said. When officers arrived, Shirley was dead.

The woman was shot, but not stabbed, and was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital. Police described her injuries as life-threatening.

Police said Burdis ran from the apartment. Police sent their helicopter to the area and flooded the Fair Lakes community with police cars. Mulrenan said that as the officers methodically searched the area, citizens helped by pointing out a fleeing man.

Finally, after about 45 minutes, Burdis was arrested behind the Target department store in the Fair Lakes shopping center. He was charged with one count of murder. Police said further charges were possible.

Shirley worked as an assistant superintendent at Clark Realty Builders, a subsidiary of Clark Construction Co. in Bethesda, a company spokesman said yesterday. The company declined further comment.

Burdis was being held last night without bond in the Fairfax jail.

Shirley's death was the 16th homicide in Fairfax this year.
