After the regional cross-country meet on Thursday, no area teams and only a handful of individual competitors survived to run at next Saturday's state championships at Great Meadow in The Plains.

In the AA Region II meet, held at Great Meadow on a different course from the one to be used next Saturday, the Liberty girls team was the closest to qualifying for next week's Group AA championships, finishing fifth with 189 points. Non-area team Harrisonburg, with 177 points, finished fourth; the top 15 finishers and runners from the top four teams qualify for the state meet.

The Eagles were led by sophomore Stephanie Giunta, who finished 11th. Broad Run senior Stephanie Garcia was the top area finisher, taking third in 18 minutes 54 seconds. Her time was five seconds ahead of Potomac Falls senior Kiersten Petersen's.

Brentsville junior Becky Stewart led her team to the victory by winning the race in 18:25, three seconds ahead of Western Albemarle's Samantha Stafford.

Two area boys qualified for the AA state meet -- Potomac Falls senior Max Werner, who finished 13th (16:19) and led his team to a sixth-place finish, and Dulles District champion Nick McLaughlin of Heritage (16:23), who took 15th. Brentsville's Nick Gehlsen won in 15:49, leading his team to victory.

Loudoun Valley and Stone Bridge brought their boys' and girls' teams to the AAA Northern Region championship, but neither team had any top 15 finishers on the 2.98-mile course at Burke Lake Park in Fairfax. The top area boys' finisher was Stone Bridge's Ephrem Feyissa, who was 26th. Of the 16 teams, the Bulldogs took 12th, and Loudoun Valley was14th.

Stone Bridge's Casey Henderson was the top girls' finisher, taking 40th place, and the Stone Bridge team finished 11th. Loudoun Valley was 13th. Oakton swept the Northern Region boys' and girls' championships.

Fauquier's teams competed in the AAA Northwestern Region meet at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, and two of the Falcons's runners advanced to the AAA state meet. Senior Ben Chrisinger finished the race in 16:55 to take 13th behind winner Devin Cornwall (Culpepper), who won in 15:55. Falcons sophomore Grace Loba also qualified, taking 11th overall in 19:48 to help her team to seventh overall.

Broad Run's Stephanie Garcia, (23) was the top area finisher at the Region II cross-country meet.
