A 46-year-old St. Mary's County woman died last week after she was struck by two vehicles on Route 235 near the Wildewood Shopping Center in California, police said.
Dawn Cady of California walked into the northbound lanes shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday and was struck by the first vehicle, said Maryland State Police Lt. Brian Cedar of the St. Mary's Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
The front fender of the vehicle lifted Cady off the road. She hit the windshield, went over the car and was struck by the second vehicle, Cedar said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
"She was at fault," Cedar said. "She was crossing in the middle of the roadway at nighttime. There was no crosswalk. Neither of the drivers who struck her were at fault or had any alcohol."
Cedar said investigators found a pipe used for crack cocaine in Cady's possession. The two drivers, he said, were friends and were following each other to work.
One of the drivers, Erica Stewart of Lexington Park, commented briefly in a telephone interview later in the week.
"We both had to take a little time off of work," she said of herself and her friend. "Somebody lost their life. It's a hard thing to deal with."
