The fifth-ranked Osbourn Park volleyball team's season came to an end Tuesday with a 20-25, 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10 loss to Cox in a Virginia AAA quarterfinal in Virginia Beach.
Cox (25-2), the defending AAA champion, scored the final four points in the fifth game after Osbourn Park had cut the lead to 11-10. Megan Schwenk (20 kills) had a kill and a block in the final sequence for Cox, which has won four state titles since 1996.
Monika Linden had 16 kills and five blocks for Osbourn Park (21-5), which was playing its third five-game match in less than a week.
Until a week ago, the Yellow Jackets were breezing, having won 18 straight matches and losing only one game in the process. Last Thursday, the Yellow Jackets qualified for the state tournament with a Northwestern Region semifinal victory over Forest Park.
But that match took five games, as did Saturday's loss at Colonial Forge in the region final that sent Osbourn Park on the road to face a team it had lost to in early September at the Richmond Showcase.
In Tuesday's match, Carly Fleming had 10 kills, 5 service points and 2 digs for Osbourn Park, Ashley Ferry had nine kills and 11 service points and Kat Beauvais had nine kills. Helene Theisen added 14 service points, but Osbourn Park lost in the state quarterfinals for the second straight season.
All four Northern Virginia teams lost Tuesday, ensuring that this year's champion will come from the Richmond or Tidewater area. In the 12 years that a state volleyball champion has been crowned, the only Northern Virginia champions have come from Prince William County: Hylton in 1993 and '94 and Forest Park in 2003.
