Five of the cases, including the most recent, on Thursday, took place in Sterling near Algonkian Parkway. Each time, the garage doors were open.
In the sixth case, in Ashburn, the garage door opener was taken from an unlocked car and was used to raise the door, a sheriff's spokesman said.
Each time, residents were at home and credit cards were stolen from purses left near doors or inside unlocked cars.
