Park View 13
Park View's season ended Friday night, but not without a fight. The AA Dulles District champions battled back from an early deficit and took the lead at halftime before losing to Harrisonburg, 28-13, in the Region II Division 4 semifinals in Harrisonburg, Va.
Park View (5-6) trailed, 7-0, after the Blue Streaks intercepted a pass inside the Patriots 20-yard line and scored soon after.
The Patriots answered with a touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback C.J. Leizear to senior wide receiver Raymond Mends in the second quarter and went ahead, 13-7, after senior safety Greg Stuart returned an interception for a touchdown just before halftime.
Valley District champion Harrisonburg (11-0), which went undefeated during the regular season for the second consecutive year, regained the lead for good in the third quarter when Park View botched a punt near its goal line. The Blue Streaks recovered for a touchdown that made it 14-13.
Turnovers continued to hurt Park View later in the second half. The Patriots yielded one touchdown on a fumble and another on an interception.
Park View shared the AA Dulles District title with Heritage but won the district's automatic playoff berth by earning .8 more points in the Virginia High School League's rating system. The Patriots struggled through the first half of the season, losing four of their first five games to nondistrict opponents Jefferson (W. Va.), Loudoun Valley, Herndon and Martinsburg (W. Va.). But Park View reversed its fortunes in the season's second half, winning four of its next five games to advance to the playoffs.
In his first year, Park View Coach Andy Hill loaded the schedule with top-tier opposition, including Jefferson, Herndon and Loudoun Valley, and although the Patriots didn't beat those teams, they gained valuable experience that helped them keep the contest close against Harrisonburg, which lost by two points in last year's state final.
