Forum on Student Success

The Greater Maryland Democratic Club will present "Rising to the Challenge, Making the Grade," a forum on raising academic achievement and parental involvement in Prince George's County public schools, during its November general body meeting. The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the meeting room of the Largo-Kettering public library, at 9601 Capital Lane in Largo. The meeting will include a discussion on raising student test scores and improving school safety and discipline.

Toy Drive at Beltway Plaza

Beltway Plaza Mall and the Greenbelt Lion's Club have begun a toy drive for area orphanages, churches and hospitals. Patrons can drop off toys in a designated toy box at the mall's Center Court until Dec. 18. Beltway Plaza Mall is at 6000 Greenbelt Rd., Greenbelt. For more information, call 301-657-9000, Ext. 138.

Free Flu Shots Available

Laurel Regional Hospital is offering free flu shots on a first-come, first-served basis from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the J. Russell Jones Conference Room of the hospital. The hospital is at 7300 Van Dusen Rd., Laurel. Shots will be administered only to adults who are at high risk for the illness -- those who are 65 and older, have long-term health conditions or weakened immune systems, and women who will be pregnant during flu season. The vaccine will not be administered to children. The hospital is not accepting appointments for shots. For more information, call 301-497-7914.
