Maryland 2A South Region Final
POTOMAC (9-2) at ATHOLTON (8-3)
Kickoff: 7 p.m. tomorrow
To the Winner: A spot in next weekend's state semifinals.
Last Week: Atholton senior fullback Patrick Hayden's 6-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter was the difference in a 24-19 victory over McDonough. Senior running back Matt Winger rushed for 190 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown, on 21 carries in the Raiders' first postseason victory in school history.
Potomac, the defending state champion, defeated Glenelg, 42-21, to advance to the region final for the third consecutive year. Senior running back Adrian McLeod rushed for three touchdowns and 96 yards on nine carries and scored another touchdown when he recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Potomac senior WR Bobby Shannon vs. Atholton senior CB Dean Hart.
Shannon, who was academically ineligible to play the first eight games, has been unstoppable since joining the team three weeks ago. A second-team All-Met basketball guard, he has shown the same explosiveness on the football field he does on the court; he has six catches for 146 yards and five touchdowns, including a 32-yard catch against Glenelg. But he will be tested by Hart, one of the top overall athletes in Howard County. Hart, who has a lacrosse scholarship to Maryland next year, will try to keep Shannon out of the end zone -- something no defense has done. Hart should get help from senior safety Winger, one of the county's fastest players, because the Raiders can't afford to let Shannon get loose in the secondary.
