Looking for volunteer opportunities? The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, a week or on a regular basis.

The Catholic Community Services Refugee Service Center seeks volunteers to help with refugee resettlement, including transporting and accompanying clients to service providers, performing home assessments and helping with administrative tasks. The Literacy Council seeks volunteers to help adults learn to read, write and speak English. Proficiency in a foreign language is not required. Hours are flexible. The Division of Consumer Affairs seeks Spanish-speaking volunteers to assist with the investigation and resolution of consumer complaints. Volunteers review complaints, draft letters, and contact merchants and consumers in an effort to resolve disputes. The work requires good writing, analytical and listening skills, and knowledge of basic computer operations. Volunteers serve in the Rockville office anytime between 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. The Aging and Disability Services section of the county Department of Health and Human Services seeks volunteers for the assisted-living ombudsman program. Ombudsmen work with residents, families and the more than 70 providers of assisted-living and group home services for the elderly to improve quality of life and resolve problems. They also provide community education to help consumers make informed choices when selecting a group home. Volunteers are asked to commit to four hours a week for at least one year.
