League: AA Dulles District.

Coach: Dave Morris, first year.

Last season: First-year school.

On the rise: G Devin Barber, 5-8, Soph.; C Taylor Jensen, 6-9, Jr.; G Max Rassman, 6-1, Soph.; F Jimmy Ray, 6-3, Jr.; G Chris Wade, 6-1, Fr.

Scouting report: Morris moves over to Briar Woods after coaching the Dominion girls the past two seasons. The first-year team is made up four juniors and seven underclassmen, three of whom are expected to start this year. The Falcons have size but lack experience and need to improve their ballhandling skills.

League: AA Dulles District.

Coach: Larry Boomer, 13th year.

Last season: 10-12 overall, 8-6 league.

Top returners: G Alex Feemster, 5-9, Sr.; F Mark McGlone, 6-3, Jr.; G-F Tyler Skidgel, 5-10, Sr.

On the rise: G Jamil As-Salaam, 5-8, Jr.; F Travis Clarke, 6-2, Jr.; G Scott Hiatt, 5-10, Soph.; C Adrian Mines, 6-4, Jr.; G R.J. Jasper, 5-9, Soph.; F Hedi Saidi, 6-0, Jr.; F Robbie Snow, 6-1, Jr.

Scouting report: Broad Run went on a notable run at the end of the last year and hopes that momentum and enthusiasm will carry over into this season. The Spartans boast a nice mix of senior leadership, talented newcomers and steady, experienced role players that should put them in contention for the district title.

League: AA Dulles District.

Coach: Doug Fulton, third year.

Last season: 3-19 overall, 2-12 league.

Top returners: G Dominic DeCastro, 6-0, Sr.; G Anthony Eifler, 5-7, Sr.; G Omar Naimyar, 5-7, Sr.

On the rise: F Casava Easterling, 6-1, Soph.; G Zach Medlock, 5-8, Jr.; F Balraaj Nijjar, 6-1, Soph.; F John Salamone, 6-5, Sr.

Scouting report: Fulton continues to build the young program, and he said his next big hurdle is getting the players to believe in themselves and their ability to win in the district. Dominion will be undersized against nearly every opponent, but it does return experience on the perimeter and guards with the ability to penetrate.

League: AAA Cedar Run District.

Coach: Wayne Brizzi, 11th year.

Last season: 12-11 overall, 7-7 AA Northwestern District.

Top returners: G Mark Ferris, 5-10, Sr.; G Nick Osbourne, 6-0, Sr.; G Dereck Tapscott, 5-10, Sr.; C Selden Walker, 6-3, Sr.

On the rise: F Frank Eldin, 6-0, Sr.; F Evan Synstad, 6-0, Jr.

Scouting report: For the second straight season, the Falcons lost their top three scorers to graduation. But Walker is back and should be a presence in the paint, something Fauquier will surely need as it heads into its first season of play in Class AAA. Brizzi said it's the unknowns -- new starters and a new league -- that will make the start of this season interesting.

League: AA Dulles District.

Coach: Glenn Fidler, first year.

Last season: First-year school.

On the rise: F Henry Brisibe, 6-2, Soph.; F Chris Coleman, 6-1, Jr.; G-F Ron Hill, 5-10, Jr.; G Richie Smith, 5-11, Jr.

Scouting report: Fidler brings a wealth of experience to the first-year Freedom program, including 16 years of coaching experience (six of which were in Ireland). He said he's looking to teach the game to his new team, which has of no seniors but a host of talented juniors. One thing the Eagles don't have is height -- the tallest player on the roster is 6-2 -- but as Fidler puts it, "I wouldn't want to run the 100 against us."

League: AA Dulles District.

Coach: Mark Mallisham, third year.

Last season: 14-9 overall, 10-4 league.

Top returners: G Bryan Brosnan, 5-9, Sr.; G Nick Scott, 5-7, Sr.; G Paul Shockley, 6-3, Sr.; G Rusty Smith, 6-1, Sr.; F Quinn Tibbs, 6-5, Sr.

On the rise: G Dale Taylor, 6-1, Sr.; C Myron McGowan, 6-6, Jr.

Scouting report: Heritage, in its fourth season, not only returns all five starters from last year's team but also adds athleticism with Taylor's return (he has not played since his freshman season) and size with McGowan, who transferred in from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. That should leave the Pride poised to make a run at its first district title.

League: AA Northwestern District.

Coach: Pat Frazer, second year.

Last season: 17-7 overall, 11-3 league.

Top returners: G Adrian Hull, 5-8, Sr.; F Mike Jones, 6-1, Sr.; F Ryan Lazo, 6-2, Sr.; G Jordan Taylor, 5-11, Jr.

On the rise: F Ashton Jenkins, 6-1, Sr.; F Brad Thiesing, 6-2, Fr.

Scouting report: Last season, Liberty had 6-10 Jonathan Dyer clogging up the middle and registering 6.6 blocks a game. This season, no player is taller than 6-2, but quickness on defense and steady perimeter shooting should keep Liberty in contention.

League: AA Dulles District.

Coach: Brian Blubaugh, first year.

Last season: 3-19 overall, 2-12 league.

Top returners: G Russ Beeler, 6-0, Sr.; F Patrick McDonough, 6-3, Sr.

On the rise: G Kevin McLister, 5-8, Jr.; F Tanner Tagg, 6-2, Jr.

Scouting report: Blubaugh moves to Loudoun County after eight seasons helping Coach Jeff Hawes build the boys' program at Potomac Falls. He's looking to instill several offensive and defensive sets -- and a winning mindset -- but says it was impossible to squeeze everything into the preseason. The teaching will continue as the season gets underway.

League: Independent (AAA National District for playoffs).

Coach: Chad Dawson, third year.

Last season: 16-8 overall, 8-6 AA Dulles District.

Top returners: F Jonathan Blaine, 6-3, Sr.; G Paul Burkard, 5-11, Sr.; F Jake Johnson, 6-5, Sr.; G Clyde Kessler, 5-9, Jr.

On the rise: F Brad Feickert, 6-2, Jr.; F Garrett Doermann, 6-4, Sr.; F Mike Hamby, 6-2, Jr.; G Jake Seymour, 6-0, Soph.

Scouting report: Johnson, the area's fourth-leading scorer a year ago at 15.9 points a game, returns to lead Loudoun Valley into its first season in Class AAA. Loudoun Valley will play mostly teams from the AA Dulles District during the regular season, but will move into the AAA National District for the playoffs. It's there that the Vikings hope to draw on their unselfishness and experience to make a run.

League: AA Dulles District.

Coach: Jeff Schneider, second year.

Last season: 8-15 overall, 5-9 league.

Top returners: G Andre Allen, 5-5, Sr.; F Amechi Anyaugo, 6-2, Jr.; F James Nolen, 6-5, Jr.; F Joey Stefanacci, 6-4, Sr.

On the rise: F Danny Foley, 6-3, Soph.; F Chris Harvin, 6-5, Jr.; G C.J. Leizear, 5-10, Soph.; G Ryan Pick, 5-10, Soph.; C Kenny Smith, 6-5, Fr.

Scouting report: With five players 6-3 or taller, Park View does not lack for size. The Patriots are also a quicker, more athletic team than a year ago and are expected to play a more pressure-oriented defense and to push the ball offensively.

League: AA Dulles District.

Coach: Jeff Hawes, ninth year.

Last season: 20-7 overall, 11-3 league.

Top returners: F Darien Almond, 6-2, Sr.; G Ben Biber, 6-0, Jr.; G Ryan Eastridge, 5-10, Sr.; F Nick Gammie, 6-2, Sr.; C Matt Lause, 6-4, Sr.

On the rise: G Cory Flickinger, 5-11, Jr.; G Kevin Richards, 6-0, Jr.

Scouting report: The names aren't as recognizable as they were a year ago, when All-Extra Player of the Year Adrian Tracy led the Panthers to the Region II semifinals. But the talent level is similar, and a winning tradition is well established at Potomac Falls, leaving Hawes hopeful this group of seniors will go far.

League: AAA Liberty District.

Coach: Sonny Green, second year.

Last season: 15-11 overall, 10-4 AA Dulles District.

Top returners: G Brent McDaniel, 6-1, Jr.; F Mike Ray, 6-4, Sr.

On the rise: G Terrence Glenn, 5-10, Jr.; F Jarel Wright, 6-4, Fr.

Scouting report: Stone Bridge's run to the Virginia AAA Division 5 championship game in football has pushed back the start of the Bulldogs' basketball campaign. Green said he expects as many as seven football players to make his final roster -- something he hopes will provide great depth -- but tryouts for those players will not begin until tomorrow. Stone Bridge will open its first season in Class AAA four days later, leaving many unknowns.

Forward Ryan Lazo (21) and Liberty will have to make do without 6-foot-10 shot-blocker Jonathan Dyer this season.
