A man was shot to death last night in the 3500 block of East Capitol Street, D.C. police said. He was the third person found slain in the District this week.

In the most recent killing, the victim was found about 8:50 p.m. with a gunshot wound to the head on a street just east of the Anacostia River, about a mile from RFK Stadium.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

On Monday night, a man was found fatally shot in a car parked in the 900 block of Blakney Lane SE. Police said they were called about 10:15 p.m. and found the man inside a 2005 Toyota Camry.

Neither victim was identified, and police gave no information about motive or suspects in either killing.

Residents of Blakney Lane said their block-long street was relatively new, perhaps five or six years old, and was laid out in connection with the construction of new housing in the area, which is near Wheeler Road SE.

"We haven't had any incidents like that," a resident said last night of the discovery of the body.

Other residents interviewed said they knew little of the incident. One said he learned of it when police knocked on his door Monday night to ask whether he had seen or heard anything.

Investigators "did not volunteer any information," a resident said.

The third homicide involved a man whose body was found in an apartment in the 3600 block of 16th Street NW on Monday morning. Police said yesterday that he died of "some form of trauma." The man was not identified.

A police spokesman said 23 homicides have been reported in the city this year, compared with 21 at the same time last year.
