The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and thunderstorms will be scattered through the southern half of the Plains and the central half of Mississippi Valley from the Great Lakes through the upper portion of the central Gulf States across the central and southern Appalachians to the Atlantic Coast from Florida to New Jersey. Temperatures will be seasonably mild over the upper Ohio Valley and central Atlantic Coast. Elsewhere temperatures over the nation will be warm to hot, reaching the upper 70s in New England and the Great Lakes to the 90s along the Gulf Coast to over 100 degrees in the desert southwest.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 105 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 100 and 249 indicate very unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will remain near 3.0 feet through today.
