Schools will be closed today in the following area jurisdictions: Montgomery, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Howard, Fairfax, Arlington and Loudoun counties, the city of Alexandria and the District of Columbia.

In general, federal employes are not expected to come to work today, said Jule M. Sugarman, deputy director of the Office of Personnel Management.

But he said those who have "some sort of critical assignment" will be expected to report.

Neither the U.S. Senate nor the House of Representatives will be in session today, but committee and subcommittee hearings may be held at the discretion of committee chairmen.

Metro buses will operate on a limited basis. Routes will be announced on radio this morning. Metro subway trains will not run because of ice on the third rail.

Dulles and National airports are open. Baltimore Washington International Airport planned to reopen by noon.

Amtrak will offer limited service. No Metro-liners will run.

Area transportation and snow removal officials predicted that major roads in all jurisdictions should be substantially cleared by this morning, but many side roads will continue to be impassable.

Supreme Court arguments scheduled for today will be postponed until Wednesday, according to Chief Justice Warren Burger. The rest of the week's Supreme Court calendar will be set back one day, Burger said.

"The reason is that we have lawyers coming in from out of town who can't make it," he said.

Most retail stores will be open. The Washington's Birthday sales planned for yesterday will be held today at many stores.

Local government offices will be closed in Prince George's, Montgomery, Fairfax and Arlington counties, and in the District of Columbia.

Alexandria City Manager Douglas Harman said all employes who can report for work should do so, particularly those in public service and public safety jobs.

County courts in Prince George's, Montgomery, Arlington and Fairfax counties will be closed. Alexandria District Court will be open, but Circuit Court will be closed. D.C. Superior Court will operate on a Saturday schedule.

The U.S. District Court in Alexandria has suspended its trial schedule and the District Court in Washington was expected to be open for emergency matters.

Maryland state offices in Baltimore and Annapolis are closed.

The Smithsonian museums are closed.
