A Riverside man who was shot after he allegedly lunged at a Prince Georges County police officer with a knife died late yesterday afternoon at Prince George's County General Hospital in Cheverly, police said.
Henry F. Brown, Jr., 30, of 5233 Kenilworth Ave., was shot twice in the abdomen shortly before 3 a.m. yesterday after he became involved in a scuffle with county police officer Paul R. Karlsven.
Karlsven has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal department investigation of the incident -- a routine procedure after a shooting.
Karlsven had attempted to question Brown after arriving on the scene of an attempted apartment break-in at the Coventry Park apartments in the 5200 block of Kenilworth Avenue.
Police had been called by an apartment resident who said that a man was attempting to break into a second-floor apartment at the complex.
Police said that as Karlsven approached Brown, Brown allegedly lunged at the officer, and the two fell down an embankment. During the scuffle, officer Karlsven was cut on the left arm by a knife that Brown was holding. Brown then lunged again with the knife, and was shot twice by Karlsven.
A second police officer finally disarmed Brown, police said.
Karlsven was treated in Prince George's County General Hospital and released.
