A 29-year-old man who physically abused an Anchorage couple and stomped their puppy to death during a robbery has been sentenced to 23 years in prison.
"I have to get your attention," Superior Court Judge Seaborn Buckalew told Richard Buza during Tuesday's sentencing.
"From where I sit, you pose a real threat to the safety and security of the rest of this community," judge said. "You could still see the fear in the victims' eyes when they looked over at the defendant [during the trial]." t
Buza was on probation in connection with a previous robbery conviction when he and another man, armed with a rifle, broke into the apartment of Dennis and Mischielle Smith the night of July 9.
The two took the young couple's last $10, physically abused them and stomped the puppy to death when it started barking at them.
Buckalew sentenced Buza to consecutive terms of five years for burglary, 10 years for robbery, five years for physical assault on the couple, one year for the dog's death and two years for being a felon in possession of a firearm with none of the jail time suspended.
Larry Larson, who was arrested with Buza and faces similar charges, has not yet gone to trial.
