Four gunshots were fired in downtown Silver Spring yesterday as Montgomery County plainclothes police broke up a jewelry store robbery and arrested two suspects.

A special assignment crime team was cruising in a van about 3:30 p.m., police said, when a "suspicious looking man" was seen entering Salter's Jewelry Store, 8650 Colesville Road. The officers waited outside while inside the store two employes and a customer were ordered to the floor at gunpoint and a man emptied display cases, according to Officer Tom Stittner.

When a man emerged from the front door and found police waiting, he fired two shots, but missed; one officer returned a shot, also missing, Stittner said. At that point, the man ran back through the store and was fired on by the store's owner. Again no one was injured, according to police.

Two suspects were apprehended behind the store and charged with assault with intent to murder, robbery and use of a handgun during a felony. They were identified as Ray Williams, 35, of 624 Keefer Pl. NW and Johnny Bernardo Williams, 26, of 703 Chillum Rd., Hyattsville. Police said they are uncle and nephew.

Police said a quantity of stolen gems and gold jewelry was recovered.
