Five members of a family from upper Montgomery County were killed in a head-on collision yesterday as they drove to a church for Christmas caroling.

Three other members of the family and the driver of the second vehicle were injured in the crash, which took place at 3:55 p.m. in Carroll County, Md., on Rte. 27, between Taylorsville and Mount Airy.

Margaret Proctor, 45, of Clarksburg, was driving north in a 1981 Volkswagen with her children and grandchildren as passengers when the collision occurred, Maryland state police reported.

State police Sgt. Hugh McCormick said a 1969 Plymouth station wagon crossed the center line and that the two vehicles collided.

The dead were identified as Rebecca Ann Jeanette, 3; Terry Proctor, 23; Roger Proctor, 14; Pauline Marie Jeanette, 18 months; and Ruth Ann Jeanette, one month, all of the family home at 2400 Clarksburg Rd.

McCormick identified the station wagon driver as Kevin Cooper, 25, of Glen Burnie, Md., and said he was charged with driving while intoxicated, failing to keep to the right of the center line and reckless driving.

Cooper was admitted to Carroll County General Hospital in Westminster, where he appeared in"pretty good shape." McCormick said.

Three other members of the Proctor family were injured. Two were taken to the shock-trauma center at University Hospital in Baltimore, and the third to Carroll County General.
