A 28-year-old Southeast Washington man got the book thrown at him in Montgomery County yesterday for the February 1980 rape and molestation of a 20-year-old Silver Spring woman.

Alan Jeffrey Matthews of 212 L St. SE, the second of three defendants to be charged in connection with the incident, was sentenced to six consecutive life sentences, plus 100 years on 12 charges that stemmed from the attack.

Assistant State's Attorneys Judy Catterton and Robert Dean said Matthews, two other men and a juvenile female forced their way into a Sligo Avenue apartment, tied up the victim's husband and used a broomstick to sexually assault her.

A Circuit Court jury before Judge John Mitchell took only 90 minutes to convict Matthews on four counts of first degree sexual offense, four counts of handgun use, first-degree rape, attempted first-degree rape, burglary and armed robbery charges, Dean said.

Matthews was arrested in the District a month after the attack. Dean said Matthews' Montgomery sentence will run consecutively with a 35-year sentence he received in Prince George's County for armed robbery. Dean said another defendant in the case received the same sentence last year. A third defendant is expected to go on trial shortly, Dean said.
