A transcript of radio messages released yesterday by the White House shows that the pilot of a Soviet attack plane was in constant communication with a ground station during his inspection, pursuit and destruction of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 over the Sea of Japan Thursday morning.

His conversations lasted 22 minutes from the time he reported "I see it" until his message, "The target is destroyed," the White House transcripts show. The "target" was a Boeing 747 civilian airliner with 269 persons aboard.

Citing security considerations, White House spokesmen refused to discuss the possible interception of messages from ground controllers to the pilot or to other pilots who scrambled to meet the off-course airliner when it strayed into Soviet airspace on a flight from New York to Seoul via Anchorage, Alaska.

The intercepted messages, which the White House called "a transcript of the shootdown of Korean Air Lines Flight 007," trace the actions of the pilot of the Soviet Su15 (identified as "805" in the transcript) as he found the target, made course corrections, noted lights on the Korean aircraft, locked his missile system into the airliner and reported firing and destroying the "target."

Meanwhile, two other Soviet pilots ("121" and "163") also were reporting their actions.

The transcript is in four elements for each transmission. The first lists times on the 24-hour clock (changed here from Greenwich Mean Time, as given in the White House release, to Tokyo-Seoul time, to conform to the time in effect at the place of the incident.)

The second element contains the callwords used by the pilots. "Deputat" (Dep) stands for ground control. The English translation of the other callwords, "Karnaval" (Kar) and "Trikotazh" (Tri) was not known.

The third element refers to the pilots. The White House said "805" is the pilot of the Su15 that shot down the airliner.

The fourth element is the text. All of it is the pilots' transmissions to ground control.

Copies of the transcript issued by the White House were illegible in a few places, as indicated in this text:
