A security guard has been arrested in the attempted kidnaping of a 13-year-old girl and slaying of her 11-year-old cousin, who was shot after trying to flag down motorists to help the girl, police said.
Horace Edward Kelly was arrested Thursday night and booked for investigation of murder and attempted kidnaping about 3 1/2 hours after Daniel David Osentowski was shot in the head and chest at close range, police said.
Police said Daniel saved his cousin, Shannon Prock, after a man leaped from a van and grabbed her as the children were walking home from a neighborhood candy store, police said.
Daniel ran to the road to try to flag down drivers for help, then returned to where his cousin was being held, police said.
"Danny started fighting him . . . . He shouted 'Run! Run!' She broke away. Then that's when he got shot," said Margaree Prock, the girl's mother.
Danny, already wounded, was shot again at close range as he covered his face with his hands, sheriff's Sgt. Jim Bowen said.
A passing motorist stopped to give the boy cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but he was dead on arrival at Riverside Community Hospital, police said.
