Three of the six challengers in Saturday's election -- Karen Trimbach, Richard Berry and George DeMarco -- are independents.
An article in the Business section yesterday incorrectly characterized the decline in 1986 profits for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., whose profits fell for the second consecutive year. It should have been made clear that 25 percent of the year's profits for the entire U.S. banking industry, not the FDIC, came from sale of securities. Even so, the industry's earnings declined last year for the first time in 25 years.
Because of an editing error, the Turning Tables column in Weekend today incorrectly lists the date of the annual Bartender's Ball at the Washington Hilton. It is Saturday night.
