Lightning, strong winds and scorching temperatures fueled dozens of fires in parched Oregon, Idaho, Utah and California, where thousands of tourists were stranded when the main entrance to Yosemite National Park was closed. Scattered rain is expected to help cool off some areas next week.

Cook County Schools Superintendent Richard Martwick deposited more than $1.35 billion from state and federal funds into bank accounts that pay no interest after pledging to stop, the Chicago Tribune reported. A state audit shows the action cost taxpayers as much as $400,000 a year in lost interest, the Tribune said.

Convicted bank robber Marvin Birdsong, 41, of Orlando, Fla., and Lilian Mae Cline, 26, of Elizabethtown, Ky., were charged with robbing $25,000 from the Shawmut Bank of Rhode Island and with interstate transportation of stolen property after they hired a limousine to take them shopping for luggage, to a lobster and champagne dinner and to an airport hotel in Connecticut. Police said the couple had $23,000 in cash when they were apprehended.

Three people were killed and four were injured when two freight trains collided head-on in northwest Georgia near Resaca, about 60 miles north of Atlanta. The engineer and conductor of the one train and the conductor of the other train were killed, said Norfolk Southern spokesman Bob Auman.
