Thirty-two American students, including a University of Virginia religious studies major, were selected this week for two years of study at England's prestigious Oxford University as winners of Rhodes Scholarships.

The 1991 winners join 2,596 other American students who have received the award since the program started in 1902. The winners were selected by the Rhodes Scholarship Trust, based at Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., and include premed students and political science and English majors.

The winners, by area, are:

New England: Jeffrey A. Dolven, of New Haven, Conn., and David Coleman, of North Bennington, Vt., both students at Yale University; and Michael Callahan, of Amherst, Mass., and Kenji Yoshino, of Cambridge, Mass., both students at Harvard University.

Mid-Atlantic: Leonard P. Stark, of Chesterfield, Mo., University of Delaware; Lawrence J. Berger, of Ithaca, N.Y., Yale; Carl D. Marci, of Allentown, Pa., Columbia University; and Theresa E. Simmonds, of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania.

Southern: Marcus A. Christian, of Clearwater, Fla., Williams College; Robert J. Esther, of St. Louis, Wake Forest University; Peter Blair Henry, of Wilmette, Ill., University of North Carolina; and Brad Ronnell Braxton, of Virginia Beach, University of Virginia.

Great Lakes: Sabina Alkire, of Champaign, Ill., University of Illinois; Jason R. Zimba, of Dearborn Heights, Mo., Williams College; Jesse Malkin, of Berkeley, Calif., Oberlin College; and Nathaniel N. Urban, of Dublin, Ohio, University of Pittsburgh.

Midwest: Kristy L. Parker, of Valley Center, Kan., Kansas State University; Darcy D. Prather, of Hazelwood, Mo., Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Edward S. Pallesen, of Lincoln, Neb., Harvard; and Todd E. Peterson, of Pierre, S.D., Gustavus Adolphus College.

Gulf: Micul Thompson, of Jackson, Miss., U.S. Air Force Academy; Darreld "Deacon" Turner, of Fairland, Okla., Harvard; and Christopher Howard, of Plano, Tex., and Gregory Pyung Won Pak, of Dallas, both students at Yale.
