The apparent box office success of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" has been preceded by global popularity of many other American films. Here are some 1997 favorites, based on the International Film Guide issued by the show business publication Variety. Of 35 countries surveyed, "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" was tops in 19 countries and "Men in Black" in 16. These rankings are based on number of admissions (A) or box office receipts (R).
