Federal agents arrested a New Jersey man today on charges that he lied to a federal grand jury about his links to arms training and bomb-making activities involving Islamic militants in the United States since the late 1980s.
The arrest came as Mary Jo White, U.S. attorney for the Southern District in Manhattan, announced a 10-count indictment charging the 39-year-old man, Mustafa Elnore, with committing perjury during a grand jury investigation into the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and other "terrorist activity" in the United States.
If convicted, Elnore faces up to five years in prison. The indictment is part of a widening investigation by federal authorities into Islamic terrorist organizations seeking to target the United States. It linked Elnore, who also goes by the name Mustafa Saif, to a number of alleged or convicted terrorists, including Sheik Omar Abdel Rhaman, the reputed mastermind of the World Trade Center bombing; El Sayyid Nosair, the convicted killer of Jewish radical Rabbi Meir Kahane; and Wadih Hage, the alleged aide to the suspected Saudi terrorist Osama bin Laden.
The indictment describes a poster in a New York mosque that advertises military training and lists Elnore's name and phone number as a contact. "Jihad, the duty to be trained in using weapons," the ad reads. "We want you to be trained how to protect yourself, your wife and your honor. We all appreciate that you invite other Muslims to join this training."
The indictment alleges that Elnore, a worshipper at the Salaam Mosque on Kennedy Boulevard in New York City, lied about his role in recruiting and training Muslims to undergo weapons training in Connecticut, Long Island and upstate New York. But it stopped short of charging Elnore with involvement in a particular terrorist act.
