Teenager Arrested After
Tip About Online Threats
CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A 17-year-old was arrested, and police found weapons, ammunition and bomb-making paraphernalia in his home after a tip that he was making threats online against his high school, fellow students and an officer assigned to the building.
Chippewa Valley High School -- which the teenager had begun attending days earlier -- was searched Thursday night, but nothing suspicious was found. The youth's father and a man accused of giving the boy bomb-making instructions also were arrested.
"He was angry at everybody. I don't know if it was one particular race," Clinton Township police Capt. Douglas Mills said Friday. "It didn't really seem to matter to him. What was in his head, we don't know for sure."
Police displayed weapons and ammunition, tools allegedly stolen from a construction site, Nazi flags and books about white supremacy and Adolf Hitler. They said the items were found at the youth's Macomb County home, 25 miles northeast of Detroit. A search of the home also yielded "instruction sheets on how to build a bomb" and videotapes showing the youth in possession of assault weapons, police said.
* REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- A Roman Catholic priest was acquitted of three charges that he sexually abused a 12-year-old girl, and the jury deadlocked on 18 similar charges. The judge declared a mistrial on those counts. It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors would retry Jose Superiaso.
* WISCASSET, Maine -- With a thunderclap of explosives, the containment dome of the Maine Yankee nuclear power plant toppled to the ground in one of the final steps of the facility's decommissioning. The 150-foot-tall structure was the most visible symbol of the 900-megawatt plant during its 24 years of operation.
* TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Toledo Roman Catholic Diocese recommended closing or merging 33 churches, citing shifting populations and a declining number of priests. The plan, to be finalized in March, would cut the number of parishes from 157 to 131.
