Iraq War Deaths
Total number of U.S. military deaths and names of the U.S. troops killed in the Iraq war as announced by the Pentagon yesterday:
Spec. Joshua J. Kynoch, 23, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Ga. Killed Oct. 1 in Baiji.
Staff Sgt. Jens E. Schelbert, 31, of New Orleans; 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Benning, Ga. Killed Oct. 1 in Ramadi.
Pfc. Roberto C. Baez, 19, of Tampa.
Sgt. Bryan W. Large, 31, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Spec. Jacob T. Vanderbosch, 21, of Vadnais Heights, Minn.
The three soldiers were assigned to 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, N.C. They were killed Oct. 3 in Haqlaniyah.
Sgt. Larry W. Pankey Jr., 34, of Morrison, Colo.; Army Reserve 467th Engineer Battalion, based in Greenwood, Miss. Died Oct. 3 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center of injuries received Sept. 23 in Balad.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian K. Joplin, 32, of Hugo, Okla.; assigned to the Navy's Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15, based in Corpus Christi, Tex. Died Oct. 4 in a noncombat accident in the central Persian Gulf.
All troops were killed in action unless otherwise indicated.
Total fatalities include five civilian employees of the Defense Department.
