The new home market is so bullish in Anne Arundel and Howard counties and parts of Prince George's County that an executive of a 10-year-old building firm in that region contends that there are "no problems in selling. We're sold out ahead of schedule."

James W. Thomasson, vice president of Brookfield Builders, said that the firm's single family dwellings and town houses are priced from $48,000 to $110,000, depending on size and lots.

"The competition is strong from Ryland, Washington Homes, Centex and U.S. Home, to name some of the nationally known firms, but we are able to get more than our share of buyers by offering options-24 of them. Most people want fireplaces and some extra space and we can offer two-foot increments per room. That gives us a semicustomizing edge," Thomasson said.

Both Thomasson and William Saunders, president of Brookfield, are members of families that have a heritage in construction. Both men learned carpentry and electricity before becoming associated in home building.

Their projects range from the Whispering Woods development of town houses in the lower price range at a big site north of Annapolis to large single houses at Hallmark Woods and Chestnut Ridge in the Crofton-David-sonville area. Most of the Brookfield homes are in Anne Arundel County.
